Electric Cars - Sometimes called Electric Vehicles

Group Info:

Name:  Electric Cars - Sometimes called Electric Vehicles

Description:

One of the biggest obstacles, range, has been a huge deterrence for the purchase and development of these cars. Battery cell research has finally overtaken most of this obstacle. New batteries are smaller, stronger, longer lasting, and recharge faster than ever before.

So what happens at night in our coal fired power stations is that they are bringing up the output to match the expected load or need for electricity during the next day. So they are almost at full output during the night ready for everybody to get up and start turning on lights and computers and machinery, heaters , elevators , trains to get to work etc, etc, etc.

Over the past few years, you have probably heard a lot of discussion about electric cars. The most common of the latest electric cars are the gas-electric hybrids that boast fuel efficiency of 45 mpg and higher. These hybrids feature the benefits that consumers indicated to manufacturers that they wanted. These include high gas mileage, reduced emissions, quietness, and long range that utilizes an existing system of fuel distribution.

Electric cars were introduced in the first half of the 19th century. At the end of the 20th century, electric vehicles held most world speed and distance records. They were cleaner, quieter, easier to operate and easier to maintain than steam or gasoline fueled cars but had a fatal weakness: battery technology limited the driving range of electric cars to between 40 and 50 miles before needing a 6 to 8 hour charge. Electric vehicles continued to be manufactured in the U.S. through 1939.

Electric Cars - Sometimes called Electric Vehicles, or EVs, use large batteries to store electricity which is then used to drive the wheels. It is as simple as that. The advantages are that electric cars are much quieter than internal combustion engines, and generate zero direct pollution. The disadvantages are the time needed to charge the batteries, the availability of charging stations, lack of range, low top speed, and lack of acceleration. One of the biggest advantages is the low-cost of running an electric car...literally a few cents per mile.
